Many researchers use Antarctica for their scientific studies because there are many things there that can’t be found anywhere else on Earth. There is a large ice sheet which covers the majority of the land mass and also serves as a permanent series of floating ice shelves which cover hundreds of miles into the sea. One of these ice shelves is as great in size as the entire state of Texas, called the Ross Shelf Ice. An American’s trip to the continent recently illustrated to the world just how closed off and alien Antarctica really is. The world’s largest ice mass can be found in Antarctica. It almost covers the entire land mass of nearly five million miles. Some scientist have said the ice sheet is 2000 feet thick, but others say it must be much thicker. My travel companion and I had two days to shop in Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the world, before the ship to Antarctica would arrive. Aside from Legos and playing outside, this boy is an avid fan of messing around on the computer and penguins as well. Other than seeing his beloved birds in the wild as they waddle across the ice this first grader will also be able to witness how they feed their newly hatched chicks in Antarctica early next month.
